MATERIALS EVALUATION & ADAPTATION
Background
This course aims to help teachers develop skills and confidence in selecting and adapting materials appropriate to the learning needs of their students. Participants get to apply the selection criteria arrived at by evaluating a wide range of materials. They subsequently practice adapting materials for specific learning groups. The anticipated outcomes of this course include greater student interest and more effective learning.

Rationale
English teachers need to know how to evaluate materials and how to adapt them to ensure optimal learning.

Objectives
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

Make optimal use of the materials available to them

Be cognizant of the principles and procedures of materials evaluation and adaptation

Develop skills in evaluating, editing and adapting resource materials to suit their teaching/learning situations

Develop their own materials to suit their students' needs

Network with other teachers to exchange materials and teaching resources.

Course Contents

Course content includes the following:
Needs Analysis
  The purpose of evaluating materials
  Criteria for evaluating materials
  Process of evaluating materials
  Criteria for selecting materials
  Advantages and disadvantages of using textbooks
  Roles of coursebooks
  Principles of adaptation
  Procedures for adapting
  Guidelines for evaluating & adapting coursebooks
  Criteria for producing teacher-created materials

Assessment
This will be in the form of group assignments to produce teacher-created materials for classroom use that incorporate the principles of evaluation and adaptation. Each group has to produce:

A review of at least five textbooks and workbooks and recommend their suitability using any of the evaluation criteria given

  Two sets of reading texts, each containing a simplified version and a more complex version of text and supporting activities

  Three graded teaching/learning tasks from lower to higher levels for listening, speaking and writing skills
