Objectives
To identify the various skills / sub-skills involved in reading

To explore methods and strategies for teaching reading comprehension skills in the ESL classroom

To facilitate effective planning of reading lessons


Course Outline
The course will cover these broad areas:
Reasons people read
Familiarisation with reading skills and sub-skills
Activities to develop reading sub-skills
Planning a workable reading sequence for the ESL classroom


Course Participants
English Language teachers teaching reading at Lower Secondary school level






Nature of Course
Input sessions on the teaching of reading skills and its implications on both school and teacher

Workshop sessions to provide hands-on experience in planning reading lessons


Impact
The course is designed to activate teachers' latent knowledge of reading. It aims at heightening teachers' awareness of the different sub-skills necessary to interpret reading texts. The workshop sessions will provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and strategies on reading.
