An Introduction to Testing and Evaluation for Teachers of English in Secondary Schools (Phase I)

Duration
This is a 5-day course equivalent to 30 credit hours.

Target Group
This course is targeted at English language teachers in the secondary schools in Malaysia.

Rationale
Classroom practitioners are often tempted to make use of test items found in workbooks and revision materials that proliferate and one of the reasons for this is the lack of awareness of the true purpose of testing as well as the lack of necessary skills and a consequential crisis of confidence in their own ability to build test items and write tests.

This course aims to expose English language teachers to the theoretical constructs and fundamental principles of testing and evaluation.


Objectives
By the end of this course secondary English Language teachers should:
be able to distinguish between teaching and testing
recognize different test types and test purposes

have a fundamental understanding of the principles of testing

be able to demonstrate awareness of the need to test different language skills and different language content area using different tools and techniques

have a fair understanding of communicative language testing

appreciate the need for and the value of a table of specifications

Objective versus Subject Tests
Item Types
Testing the Oral and Aural Skills
Testing the Productive Skills
Communicative Language Testing
Stages in Test Construction

Test Specifications

Assessment
There will be no formal assessment.
 
Certification
Participants who meet course completion requirements will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance issued by the Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education
