English for Early Childhood Education (EECE) :English for Early Childhood (EECE) is a one-year training course specially designed for in-service preschool teachers. The aim of the course is twofold: to develop preschool teachers who are able to implement the new Malaysian Preschool Curriculum Standard effectively in their own classrooms, and, to equip teachers with skills to carry out professional development activities for fellow teachers in their districts.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
• Review and extend the teachers’ knowledge base of teaching and learning in preschool
• Develop appropriate strategies for effective use of English in preschool
• Enhance the teachers’ skills in line with current best practices
• Develop knowledge and skills in teachers for facilitating professional development among colleagues
Course Structure
Course delivery is in four phases. Each phase involves face-to-face interaction followed by school based assignments. Phase One is a three-week certificate course in collaboration with the Regional Language Centre (RELC). The remaining three phases are completed at ELTC. Course topics focus on extending teacher skills and knowledge in English instruction at preschool level and continuing professional development.
Course participants
There are 24 qualified preschool teachers identified as state trainers participating in this training. The teachers come from 11 states including Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

The Supplementary Reading Programme (SRP) under the MOE – UNICEF – OGFICE strategic partnership :The Supplementary Reading Programme (SRP) is part of the Capacity Building initiative for teachers through a collaborative effort between ERPD and ELTC to upscale the teachers’ instructional skills and pedagogical content knowledge.

The Course Objectives include:

1. To expose course participants to resources, ideas and strategies that will enable them to maximize the use of resources provided under the MOE – UNICEF – OGFICE strategic partnership.

2. To provide teachers serving in remote and island schools an opportunity for professional development thereby enhancing their capacity to deliver the national English language curriculum.

3. To sensitize course participants to the fact that learning outcomes specified in the curriculum can be achieved in a range of learning contexts though imaginative use of limited resources.

4. To provide teachers serving under challenging circumstances an opportunity to network with their peers serving under similar constraints.

The Programme:

19 primary school teachers from the outskirts of Kuching participated in this programme held at the Regency Rajah Court Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak from 2 – 5 February 2010. Based on the new Primary English syllabus, the teachers were introduced to Basic Decoding Skills and utilized the resources provided for practice. As major components of the course, Read Alouds and Story Telling activities were also carried out. In addition, sessions were allocated for the teachers to explore Text-based grammar, non-fiction texts and language games. Written feedback was encouraging and positive. More than 90% of the teachers believed that the course was insightful, informative and practical. They also agreed that the course should be extended to the other teachers in Sabah and Sarawak.
